  • At the One Moto Show one of my favorite bikes was this one. I looked up who built it and it was a woman: @ridewell . I have realized since I started riding that it’s harder to find clothing made by and for women, it’s harder to find bikes made by and for women. This is a badass bike and I know there are more women out there creating, building, modding bikes. And they don’t get enough exposure! So please tag the badass women you know who are building, creating, modding, like @ridewell and @jwhatsaidwhat ✌🏼 - who else is doing this?   • When I was in probably second grade one of my best friends Chris and I used to play with his Evel Knievel action figure in the alley behind his house. We’d build ramps and obstacles and set him off to jump dramatically over them. We had so much fun. I wanted one! But all I had at home were “girl” toys. Saw this in @the1moto show last week, and brought back those memories. I don’t know that Evel Knievel was any kind of role model (though surely not worse that many action figures today). But I do think it’s really important that as a society we think about what toys kids play with, and make sure they have access to ones they are drawn to. So they can build their own identities.   • Part 4. For much of my life I’ve had a severe fear of public speaking. My brain would shut down as I doubted every word coming out of my mouth, looking around I’d see the world doubt me. I was good leading small groups, I was a great workshop facilitator. But once it was just me talking with no interaction, phew I hated every second & I avoided it. Over the course of several years I got better, more confident. But I still had only spoken on stage a handful of times & the fear was real. So in 2015, I set out to change it. My word that year was “presence.” I worked on being present & in the moment - I renewed my commitment to meditation daily. And I worked on stage presence. I set myself a goal of speaking on stage 7 times that year. It was a stretch goal, I had no idea how I would do it. So I put myself out there as a speaker. I contacted a couple conference organizers & asked if they needed more speakers. And then it just started to happen: I was asked. I’d say yes & then figure out how to do it - & how to get past the fear - later. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over and over again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the end of the year, I had spoken on stage 37 times: panels, solo talks, keynotes. In September of that year, @waynesutton & I hosted our first @techinclusion conference so I was on stage all day for 2 days. I was interviewed by television, radio & print/digital media globally, quoted or featured in about 25 different articles. I met #mohammedyunus, @malala, @chealseaclinton, @sherylsandberg & several other people I would not have dreamed of meeting at the time. I participated in 8 roundtable discussions with policymakers & tech leaders (Eg at the White House & the US Council of Mayors). Just 3 years later I did a TED talk, pictured above. Since my year of presence I’ve spoken on hundreds of stages around the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was, and still is, a lot of work. But every time I step on a stage it gets easier - & I know I’m changing at least one life. That’s what keeps driving me forward. . . #presence #oneword #wordoftheyear
  • Part 3. The fourth year, my word was passion. So... about 5 weeks into the year, my now ex-husband and I took a long drive and talked and talked. We stopped driving and over a nice dinner, we had a wonderful honest conversation about how we lacked passion in our relationship. At the end of that conversation we decided: despite our friendship, we both were ready to take a leap of faith and get divorced. It was scary. (We made a promise that if we were old and grey and lonely we’d find each other and remarry.) But we thought we could find passion out there, we thought we could be happier. A short time later, when I was not expecting it... I met Wayne. And Wow. I found passion, let me tell you! Passion is one of the things that defines us. For real. I was so rewarded for that leap of faith. Just wow. I love this man. Honestly that would be an amazing end but there is much more to that year. By mid-year, I realized my job was draining me of passion. It was a miserable year professionally - I was nearly broken by biases, microaggressions, harassment and all the ways these squashed my ability to shine, all the ways they made me forget how good I am, how accomplished I am, how smart I am. I was in a dark place by mid-year professionally. In that darkness something else rose though. I realized something big. I’ve been working to change the world for the better my whole life and here I was having a lived experience (not the first or the last but a big one) of exclusion, bias, harassment. It was an aha moment. I realized that pretty much all the worlds problems boil down to exclusion in one way or another. And THAT is a place I know I can have impact. So I put things into place to leave my job as an executive to take on the tech industry - and make it more inclusive. It is important in so many ways today and tomorrow, to close the wealth and innovation gap stemming from this industry.   • Part 2. After 2 years of self-compassion, I moved on to a new word. Self-compassion is something I still have to remind myself about - it’s so easy to go go go, and for me to focus so hard on making the world better for other people and for the future, I have to remember to stop and nurture my self. So I bring that word into every year. My word the next year was compassion. I realized that year that compassion is the biggest need on our planet right now. It’s something we are often missing in big global decisions and small decisions throughout our lives. People, humans matter. Also in my work, if I want to create world change, I have to change behaviors. And to create behavior change I have to design with empathy (an important part of compassion). . . I was working as a consultant helping NGOs, social entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 companies to tell stories that change the world. In my work that year, I began to teach my clients empathy. My work got better, their work got better, my consultancy took off like never before. I spoke at a conference about storytelling as a catalyst for changing behavior and it impacted many people in the audience, some of whom still keep in contact today. And from that talk I landed a huge client in San Francisco (I was in Seattle at the time). A year later that client hired me as an Executive - head of Marketing and Culture - and brought me to San Francisco. One word. Again, life changing in ways I never could have expected. My muscle for compassion has continued to grow and expand.
